Glossary For the glossary, you must define about 200 environmental law terms. One extra point per week for early submission (maximum of five extra points), and one point deducted for each class that it is late, but not later than the last day of class. You must type or print every word of your glossary submission yourself. You are free to work with others on the terms, but you may not copy or paste answers from any source. Click here for the glossary. Besides the extra credit, you will learn more in class by completing the glossary early, as you will be familiar with the terms. Wikipedia is a good site for help, as well as the glossary/abbreviations of the Bay Area Air Quality Management Distirict (which are found at baaqmd.gov/about-air-quality). Other help is found in the lists of government agencies involved with the environment, which are handed out in class early in the term. Appellate Case Analysis (1-2 pages) Read an appellate court case on an environment issue. (Cases will be available on the first day of class) Write a report with the following information: 1. Name of the case 2. A summary of the case in one paragraph 3. Describe the court making the decision and the date of the decision 4. Summarize the facts in the case 5. Summarize the decision of the trial and appellate court (if any) 6. Define procedural terms that were new to you in the case 7. Summarize the law in the case, based upon the court's decision 8. Elaborate on the court's decision Attach a copy of the appellate court case to your report. The syllabus indicates when the case analysis is due. Class participation/Environmental articles For each class meeting, students are expected to bring a printed article on the environment or natural resources from a recent publication. The article must be on the subject of that day's class. Your article shall be turned in before the start of class. You are not expected to explain the underlying legal issues, but should be prepared to summarize the facts in the article. Discussion in class of your article, or any other discussion by you in class, gives you a point towards the class participation portion of your grade. Federal Courthouse Visit More information can be found under the "Announcements." Government Meeting You are required to attend a meeting of a local government body, planning commission, or environmental regulatory agency. Bring a copy of the meeting agenda to me signed by one of those participating in the meeting (i.e., commissioner, city clerk, council member). See "Announcements" for possible meeting dates. |
